Looking back at the 11 Supernovas who gathered at the Sabaody Archipelago, there is one fascinating thing they all have in common.

Every one of them was a formidable rookie with a bounty of over 100 million berries, yet their fighting styles overlap surprisingly little.

Luffy fights by freely manipulating his own body, Eustass Kid gathers metal with magnetism, and Trafalgar Law creates a space that lets him transform the entire battlefield. Basil Hawkins combines straw dolls with fortune-telling, X Drake transforms into a massive ancient creature, Scratchmen Apoo turns his own body into musical instruments, Jewelry Bonney manipulates age, and Capone Bege stores people and weapons inside his own body.

By contrast, Roronoa Zoro and Killer earned their places among the Supernovas through weapon skills and physical ability rather than relying on Devil Fruit powers.

So if we look at the Supernovas simply as “11 powerful rookies,” we are only seeing half of what makes them interesting.

They are also a group that demonstrates, all at once, just how many different kinds of combat ONE PIECE can create.

Rather than simply ranking who is stronger, this article will look at what each ability can do, how it is used in actual combat, and why each Supernova creates a completely different kind of excitement.

1. How many of the 11 Supernovas are confirmed Devil Fruit users?

Let’s begin by answering the most obvious question as clearly as possible.

Among the 11 Supernovas introduced at the Sabaody Archipelago, the characters currently confirmed to possess Devil Fruit powers are Luffy, Eustass Kid, Trafalgar Law, Basil Hawkins, X Drake, Scratchmen Apoo, Jewelry Bonney, and Capone Bege — eight in total.

According to current official character information, Luffy possesses the Hito Hito no Mi, Mythical Zoan, Model: Nika; Kid has the Jiki Jiki no Mi; Law the Ope Ope no Mi; Hawkins the Wara Wara no Mi; Drake the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Ancient Type, Model: Allosaurus; Apoo the Oto Oto no Mi; Bonney the Toshi Toshi no Mi; and Bege the Shiro Shiro no Mi.

That leaves Zoro, Killer, and Urouge.

Zoro’s official character information does not list a Devil Fruit, and he continues to fight primarily through swordsmanship, Haki, and physical ability.

Killer is a little more complicated. At Sabaody he was not a Devil Fruit user, but later in Wano he was forced to eat a failed SMILE. Official information also lists it as “SMILE (failure).” In other words, although he ate one, he did not gain an ability, so it is difficult to classify him as a functioning Devil Fruit user.

The character who requires the most caution is Urouge.

At Sabaody, Urouge enlarged his body while fighting a Pacifista, but his official character profile still does not identify a specific Devil Fruit. The official page describes his growth in size and tremendous strength without naming any Devil Fruit.

So, based on currently available official information, the most accurate way to classify them is eight confirmed Devil Fruit users, Zoro as a non-user, Killer as someone who ate a failed SMILE but gained no power, and Urouge as a character whose ability has not yet been clearly identified.

Getting this one sentence right is already enough to distinguish the article from the vague claim often seen in search results that “nine of the Supernovas are Devil Fruit users.”

2. Kid’s magnetism and Law’s Ope Ope no Mi — two abilities that dominate the battlefield

https://i.pinimg.com/1200x/04/dd/19/04dd197f41896be141c03a1ffb7168de.jpg

Kid and Law are both Paramecia-type ability users, but the way they fight is completely different.

Even so, they share one very important characteristic.

Rather than simply punching an opponent directly, their abilities turn the entire battlefield into a space that favors them.

Kid’s Jiki Jiki no Mi uses magnetism. He pulls in surrounding metal to create giant arms and weapons, combining countless pieces of scrap metal into massive structures that can be used for both offense and defense. Official information also confirms Kid as a Jiki Jiki no Mi user.

It becomes especially interesting if we imagine Kid fighting in a place full of metal, such as a city or factory.

To his opponent, wreckage and weapons are just objects. To Kid, they are ammunition, armor, and giant mechanical limbs waiting to be used.

In other words, Kid is not merely a fighter who carries weapons. He is a combatant who turns the environment itself into his weapon.

Law, on the other hand, fights by creating a space called “ROOM” with the Ope Ope no Mi.

Inside that space, Law can switch the positions of people and objects, cut targets apart, move them, and perform other unusual manipulations that fit the theme of “surgery.” His official character profile also describes the Ope Ope no Mi as an ability that allows him to freely modify bodies within his operating space.

The difference between the two can be expressed very simply.

Kid turns the battlefield into a giant magnetic factory, while Law turns it into an operating room.

That is why even though both are Supernova captains, the atmosphere of their battle scenes feels completely different.

Kid’s battles are massive, rough, and heavy.

Law’s battles are precise, built around position, distance, and spatial calculation.

It is a strong example of how powerful characters can feel completely different when the key difference is not merely attack power, but how they use the battlefield itself.

3. How did Basil Hawkins combine straw dolls and fortune-telling into a single combat style?

https://i.pinimg.com/1200x/04/dd/19/04dd197f41896be141c03a1ffb7168de.jpg

Hawkins is one of the Supernovas whose personality and abilities fit together most naturally.

Hawkins possesses the Wara Wara no Mi.

He can transform his body into forms connected with straw, and he can also link other people’s lives to straw dolls so that damage inflicted on him is transferred to them instead. His official profile likewise explains that he can place other people’s lives into straw dolls and make them take damage in his place.

But Hawkins has another weapon.

Card divination.

Here, an important distinction has to be made.

It has not been officially established that Hawkins’ use of cards to calculate victory rates or survival chances is itself a power of the Wara Wara no Mi.

His official character profile also presents his card divination and Devil Fruit power as separate traits.

Yet in actual combat, the two function almost like parts of one system.

Hawkins first uses his cards to judge his chances of success and survival.

Then, depending on the result, he decides whether to fight, flee, or submit.

Once battle begins, he uses his straw dolls to redirect damage and transforms his own body.

In other words, Hawkins’ fighting style is not simply “the ability to use straw.”

Divination → probability assessment → decision-making → combat with the Wara Wara no Mi

This entire sequence is Hawkins’ battle style.

That is why Hawkins can create tension simply by drawing a single card before an attack begins.

Even without using a finishing move, readers are already wondering, “What is his survival rate this time?”

Rather than having an ability pasted onto his personality, Hawkins is a character whose personality and powers reinforce each other.

4. Why was X Drake given an Ancient Zoan ability?

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/90/dc/15/90dc15025153d8a4fabe3ddcd28d3eb0.jpg

X Drake possesses the Ryu Ryu no Mi, Ancient Type, Model: Allosaurus.

He is an Ancient Zoan user who can transform into a massive carnivorous dinosaur, and this power is clearly confirmed in his official character information.

Drake’s ability does not require the audience to learn complicated rules in advance the way Law’s or Hawkins’ abilities do.

You understand it the moment you see it.

A massive body.

Powerful jaws.

The teeth of a carnivorous dinosaur.

An overwhelming physique.

Enhanced physical power.

The single fact that “he can transform into a dinosaur” immediately tells us what kind of combat to expect.

So why include such a straightforward ability among the Supernovas?

Oda has not officially explained every creative reason for giving Drake this specific power, so from this point onward we are looking at it as a matter of story composition.

If every Supernova had a rule-heavy ability like Kid, Law, or Hawkins, their battles could easily become too dependent on lengthy explanations of powers.

Drake provides something much more primal in between.

He transforms, charges, and bites.

On top of that, Drake is also a former Marine Rear Admiral.

There is something fascinating about a man trained in a highly disciplined military organization transforming into a gigantic prehistoric predator the moment battle begins.

The rational soldier and the primitive power of a dinosaur coexist inside the same character.

5. Apoo turns his body into instruments — the bizarre power that turns sound into attacks

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/8e/4d/64/8e4d64bd58189140e074c17a19c89c82.jpg

Scratchmen Apoo has one of the strangest ability concepts among all the Supernovas.

Apoo is a user of the Oto Oto no Mi.

He transforms different parts of his body into musical instruments and uses the sounds produced by playing them as attacks. His official profile likewise explains that he converts his body into instruments and attacks through the sounds he performs.

What makes this concept special is that the act of attacking itself is completely different from that of other characters.

Zoro draws a sword.

Kid pulls in metal.

Urouge throws a punch.

But Apoo performs music.

Music enters the battle scene, his body becomes an instrument, and notes and sound are turned directly into combat effects.

The scene in Sabaody where Apoo attacked Kizaru is one of the clearest examples of what makes his ability memorable. He did not inflict actual damage on the Logia user Kizaru, but he attacked a Marine Admiral in a way completely unlike any other Supernova. His official profile also specifically highlights the fact that Apoo challenged Kizaru using his ability.

Apoo also belongs to the Longarm Tribe.

Official information describes Apoo as a member of the Longarm Tribe, a people with extraordinarily long arms.

Once that unique body structure is combined with his musical ability, even his silhouette becomes impossible to confuse with another Supernova.

6. Bonney’s age manipulation and Bege’s Shiro Shiro no Mi — versatility more frightening than raw attack power

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/e6/72/8b/e6728b02e45cc4a9d53516427db73537.jpg

Bonney and Bege are characters whose abilities are easy to underestimate if they are judged only by the question, “How hard can they hit?”

Jewelry Bonney’s Toshi Toshi no Mi allows her to manipulate age.

Bonney has been shown changing her own age since long ago, and current official character information clearly identifies her as a user of the Toshi Toshi no Mi.

In more recent developments, the scope of the ability has expanded far beyond simply switching between a child and an adult, extending into forms connected to possible futures. Even official merchandise introduced in 2026 presents Bonney in separate forms including her childhood appearance, an older form, and her “most free future.”

Bonney’s real strength is not raw attack power, but her ability to change a person’s state.

Changing appearance and age can be useful for infiltration and can also be used to confuse or disable opponents.

Capone Bege’s Shiro Shiro no Mi, on the other hand, turns a single person into an entire military base.

Bege can shrink people and weapons and store them inside his own body, then release them whenever necessary. He can even transform his body into the enormous fortress known as “Big Father” to protect his allies. His official profile explains that the inside of his body becomes a castle capable of storing troops and weapons and can be used for both offense and defense.

The more you think about it, the more frightening the ability becomes.

To an enemy, it may look as if a single man is simply walking toward them.

But inside that one man could be a meeting room, soldiers, guns, and cannons.

Bege alone functions as a fortress, a troop carrier, and a command center.

That is why Bonney and Bege should not be judged by attack power alone.

Bonney changes the condition of people, while Bege changes the scale of the forces participating in battle.

7. Zoro and Killer — two combatants who became Supernovas without Devil Fruit powers

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/ca/26/42/ca26422f75d8a9c26161e528a2c8b6f1.jpg

After looking at all the flashy powers of the Supernovas, two characters stand out even more.

Zoro and Killer.

They were the only two non-captains among the 11 Supernovas, and at Sabaody neither relied on a Devil Fruit ability.

Zoro’s weapon is Three-Sword Style.

He fights with three swords, physical strength, swordsmanship, and battle instinct. His current official character profile identifies him as a combatant of the Straw Hat Pirates and a member of the Worst Generation, while listing no Devil Fruit ability.

Killer likewise fights with scythe-like weapons attached to both hands, combining speed, rotation, and close-quarters combat.

His official profile also presents his twin weapons and physical combat as the core of his fighting style. He later ate a failed SMILE, but he did not gain an ability from it.

Because these two exist, the Supernovas never become merely “a collection of powerful Devil Fruit users.”

They prove that a pirate can earn a bounty of over 100 million berries and stand alongside ability-using captains without possessing a Devil Fruit power.

What makes it even more interesting is that the two stand beside Luffy and Kid respectively.

Zoro is at Luffy’s side, and Killer is at Kid’s.

The captains wield flashy abilities, while the fighters beside them push their bodies and weapons to the limit and enter the same deadly battlefields.

In a sense, it may be these two non-ability combatants who complete the diversity of the Supernovas.

8. Longarm Tribe Apoo and Sky Island native Urouge — the Supernovas were never a human-only group

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/cc/6b/53/cc6b53b617e73ee56dc363014bc90a16.jpg

The Supernovas differ in more than just the seas they come from.

Their body structures and racial backgrounds are also diverse.

Apoo is a member of the Longarm Tribe.

He has far longer arms and a more unusual joint structure than ordinary humans. When that body is combined with the Oto Oto no Mi, which turns his body into instruments, it creates combat scenes that no other character could produce.

Urouge is even more mysterious.

He comes from a Sky Island and has wings on his back. His official profile likewise identifies him as a giant man from a Sky Island.

Moreover, there are still parts of Urouge’s combat ability that have never been given a clear official name.

At Sabaody he enlarged his body to fight a Pacifista, and in the New World he displayed enough power to defeat one of the Big Mom Pirates’ top officers, the Sweet Commanders.

For that reason, Urouge remains one of the 11 Supernovas with the largest amount of unexplained material surrounding him.

Looking at Apoo and Urouge together makes it clear that the Supernovas were never simply a group of human pirates from different countries.

They differ not only in their seas of origin, but also in race, body structure, and environment.

And those differences naturally lead to different ways of fighting.

9. Close combat, ranged attacks, battlefield control, and army-type abilities — who is the most unusual?

https://i.pinimg.com/1200x/fe/50/41/fe5041f861ddfa04a2a9c494d837ffb8.jpg

The fighting styles of the 11 Supernovas become much easier to understand when they are divided into broad categories.

Zoro, Killer, Drake, and Urouge are primarily close-range fighters.

Luffy also relies heavily on direct physical engagement, so his fighting style has a very strong close-combat element.

Kid and Law are the clearest examples of battlefield-control fighters.

Kid moves surrounding metal and objects through magnetism, while Law manipulates space itself with ROOM.

Apoo is especially unusual among ranged and special-attack fighters.

That is because he attacks through the invisible medium of music and sound.

When it comes to an army-type ability, Bege is almost in a category of his own.

One person becomes a castle, a troop carrier, and an arsenal.

Bonney cannot be ignored when we look at abilities that alter conditions.

The moment she changes her own age or that of an opponent, the fight stops being a simple contest of strength against strength.

Hawkins is difficult to place in just one category.

Damage transfer, straw transformations, fortune-telling, and probability assessment all operate together.

So when asking, “Who has the most unusual ability among the Supernovas?” it is more interesting to answer it this way than to select just one person.

Law, who changes space itself; Bege, who turns one person into an army; and Apoo, who turns sound into an attack, are all bizarre in completely different directions.

It is not about which one ranks above the others. Their forms of creativity are simply different.

10. Why did Oda give all 11 Supernovas fighting styles that barely overlap?

https://i.pinimg.com/736x/66/d2/55/66d2558370c28bd056f2aecea40abc93.jpg

Eiichiro Oda has not officially explained every reason why he assigned each Supernova a specific ability.

So this section looks at the result as it appears in the story itself.

The biggest reason the 11 Supernovas leave such a strong impression is not simply that their technique names are different.

The “verbs” they use in battle are different.

Kid pulls.

Law cuts and moves.

Hawkins predicts and redirects damage.

Drake transforms and bites.

Apoo performs.

Bonney changes age.

Bege hides and releases.

Zoro cuts.

Killer spins and drives into the enemy.

Urouge enlarges his body and builds power before striking.

Luffy freely transforms his own body and breaks straight through the enemy.

Because of this, even when they fight the same opponent, their battle scenes do not feel repetitive.

When Kid appears, the metal around him begins to move.

When Law appears, space and the positions of people are rearranged.

When Apoo appears, music becomes an attack.

When Bege appears, an army emerges from a single human body.

When Hawkins appears, a card may be drawn before the fight even begins.

When Bonney appears, an opponent’s age and appearance can change before anything else.

The characters’ visual designs work in the same way.

Kid’s giant mechanical arm, Law’s spotted hat and long sword, Hawkins’ long blond hair and cards, Drake’s dinosaur form, Apoo’s long arms, Bonney’s pink hair, Bege’s mafia-inspired outfit, Urouge’s wings and huge physique, Zoro’s Three-Sword Style, and Killer’s mask all give them visual traits that are almost impossible to confuse at a glance.

That is why the 11 Supernovas are too interesting to be viewed only as a group of rivals.

They are almost like a single showcase demonstrating how many different kinds of battles Devil Fruits can create, how powerful characters can become even without Devil Fruits, and how race, weapons, and personality can all be combined with combat abilities.

This is also extremely important from a creative-writing perspective.

If every powerful character is given only a bigger explosion, greater speed, or a stronger punch, the cast will eventually begin to feel repetitive.

By contrast, the way a character attacks, defends, moves, gathers information, and disables an opponentcan all be designed differently, allowing fighters of similar overall strength to feel completely distinct.

This is one reason readers could quickly tell the 11 Supernovas apart even though nearly all of them appeared at roughly the same time at Sabaody.

They were not different only in their faces and clothing.

The way they thought about fighting was different.

So the most interesting question when examining the Supernovas’ abilities is not simply, “Who is the strongest?”

What ability does each person have?

What can they do with that ability?

Are they still strong without relying on it?

How do they turn the same battlefield into something that belongs to them?

Looking at all four questions together makes the differences among the 11 Supernovas much clearer.

And that difference is one of the biggest reasons why, even after so many years, the 11 rookies who appeared together at Sabaody are still remembered as distinct characters rather than as a single interchangeable group.
